Synopsis: Ingirunthu (Here and Now)  is the story of a deaf mute, a struggling mother and a researcher from Colombo whose lives are thrown together on a vibrant tea plantation in Sri Lanka, in the backdrop of escalating social and political violence. It is a multi textured and multi narrative film about the minority Tamil tea plantation people of Sri lanka who were brought over from South India as indentured labour in the 19th century. It combines story telling, fiction, melodrama, fantasy and suspense with documentary detail, archival material, news telecast and historical reconstructions.

Esther Valli belongs to no one and to everyone. Orphaned, yet fed by the community, she bears witness to life in the plantation line rooms and fields. Embodying the disfigurement of her community living under harsh conditions of labour, poverty, and a legacy of political betrayals, she haunts us – like Toni Morrison’s Beloved – and stands as a voice of conscience in the film.
