OSCAR Pistorius has sworn an affidavit saying he shot dead his lover Reeva Steenkamp by mistake in the dark.

It comes as police were studying Reeva’s iPad amid reports late night messages from rugby hunk Francois Hougaard had caused a furious row with Blade Runner Pistorius, 26.In his statement, the Paralympic hero claims he was woken by what he thought was an intruder and propelled himself from bed naked.

He said he grabbed his 9mm pistol and fired in the dark at the bathroom where he thought the intruder was hiding. Pistorius says he was then horrified when he returned to the bedroom at his mansion to find Reeva, 29, was not there. She was killed after being hit in the head by bullets fired through the bathroom door.

The statement will be read out this morning when Pistorius appears in a South African court accused of murder.

His lawyer Barry Roux will also insist a bloodied baseball bat found in the bedroom was “at no time used to attack Reeva or crush her skull”. Sources said he will say Pistorius broke the bathroom door down with the bat to get help for model Reeva after realizing what he had done.

Pistorius swore the affidavit under oath during a meeting with his legal team at a Pretoria police station ahead of today’s two-day bail application. Meanwhile, Reeva’s iPad is said to have become an “intrinsic part” of the inquiry. It was allegedly found on the floor in Pistorius’s bedroom by police.

Reports suggest online messages to Reeva from Hougaard, 24, might form part of the prosecution’s case against Pistorious. The South African international rugby star, a pal of the couple, has a reputation as a ladies’ man.
