Mani Ratnam....


              Everyone knows the name of this famous director. Yes he’s one of the best directors in Tamil Cinema. His real name is Gopala Ratnam. He was born on June 2nd 1958 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.He graduated in management.

His father was a producer so he plunged into the cinema after the graduation. He directed many movies in many languages like Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu. He married Suhassini who is niece of Kamal Hassan. Apart from direction Maniratnam was a producer and a screen writer. He has only one son called Nandhan. His own production company is Madras Talkies.

              Although he is a tamil director his 1st film was in Kannada “ Pallavi anu pallavi” (1983). His first tamil film was ‘Pagal nilavu”(1985). In the year of 1985, Mani Ratnam directed his next film Idhaya Kovil with Mohan, Radha, Ambika in lead Roles. Mani Rathnam movie Idhaya koil film did well in Box Office, but not much. Fifth film of Mani Ratnam is Mouna Ragam with Mohan and Revathy. Mani rathnam movie Mouna raagam was released in the year of 1986. Ilaiyaraaja did Music and P.C.Sriram did cinematography. Mani rathnam's Mouna raagam done very well in box office and gave good name to Mani Ratnam. Mouna Raagam is a milestone film in Mani Ratnam's carrier. Music of Mouna Raagam was big among the audiences.

             Sixth Film of Mani Ratnam is Naayagan with Kamal Hassan. Mani Rathnam's Naayagan film is based on the real life story of Varadarajan Mudaliar, underworld king in mumbai. This became great success in Mani Ratnam's carrier. Naayagan was listed in All Time 100 greatest film of TIME Magazine.


                   Seventh Film of Mani Ratnam is Agni Natchatrram with Prabhu, Karthick, Amala and Nirosha in lead roles. Agni natchatram film did well in box office and Mani Ratnam got appreciation for new techniques in camera frameworks.


                      Geethanjali and Anjali are eighth and ninth film of Mani Ratnam. In 1991, he directed Thalapathy with Rajini and Mamooty. This story is based on the Mahabharatham. Rajini and Mamooty characters are like Karnan and Thuriyodhanan. This film was very well received by audience.


                     Eleventh Movie of Mani Ratnam is Roja. Roja is like a epic in Tamil film history. In Roja, Mani Ratnam broke his assosiation with Ilaiyaraaja and introduced AR Rehman as Music director. Mani Rathnam's Roja film deals with terrorism in Kashmir. Arvind Samy and Madhubala was in lead role.Later Roja was dubbed into Hindi, Telugu and other regional languages of India.


                     In 1995, Mani Ratnam directed the movie Bombay with Arvind Samy and Manisha in lead roles. Mani rathnam's Bombay film is based on the Hindu-Muslim riots in mumbai during 1993.

                 
                      In 1997, Mani Ratnam directed the movie Iruvar which based on the Tamil Nadu politicians MGR, Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha. Mohanlal, Prakash Raj and Ishwarya Rai in lead roles. Iruvar is Ishwarya Rai's debut movie.

                  
                       In 1998, Mani Ratnam's Hindi debut movie was with Shah Rukh Khan in the movie of Dilse. Preeti Zinda made her debut in Dilse.


                     In 2000, Mani Ratnam returned back to Tamil film Alaipayuthey with Madhavan and Shalini in lead roles. Alaipayuthey is the debut movie of Madhavan.

                     
                    In 2002, Mani Ratnam directed Kannathil Muthamittal with Madhavan and Simran in lead role. This film is based on Sri Lankan Tamil's life. Kannathil Muthamittal won Six National Film Awards. After that he directed Yuva, Auyutha Ezhuthu, Guru, Raavan and Raavanan.

                   
                    Mani ratnam’s next movie titled as Kadal (sea). It’s about the fisherman’s life of Rameswaram. Gautham who is son of actor Karthik will be in the lead role.  Samantha will be in the heroine role. Mani Ratnam’s favourite musical mascot, A.R. Rahman, composing the film's tracks and cinematography by Rajeev Menon.

 1990 - Anjali won National Film Award for Best Film in Tamil

 1992 – Roja won National Film Award for Best Film on National Integration, Filmfare South Award  
                 for Best Film and Best Director, Tamil Nadu Film State Award for Best Director.

 1995 – Bombay won National Film Award for Best Film on National Integration.

 1997 – Iruvar won Filmfare South Award for Best Film.

 2002 – Kannathil Muthamittal won National Film Award for Best Film in Tamil, Filmfare South Award 
                 for Best Film and Best Director, Tamil Nadu Film State Award for Best Director

 2007 – Guru won Filmfare Hindi Best Director, Filmfare Hindi Best Movie
